1. WEN 6301 Electric Detailing Palm Sander

WEN 6301 Electric Detailing Palm Sander
  • Sanding pad size: 5-½”x 5’’ to ½” x 3-⅛”. inches;

  • Model No: 6301;
  • Motor: 1.0 Amp;
  • Weight: 2 lbs;
  • In the package: Dust Collection Port, Hook & Loop Base, 80 Grit Sandpaper and Dust Port Adapter.

Changing sandpaper has never been easier as it does with WEN 6301 sander. A velcro base for sandpaper helps to change the paper just by peeling it off. Within seconds you can change papers of different grits for different applications. As this sender has only one speed, papers of various grits are a must to achieve different finishes for different purposes.

It is a budget sander which is perfect for light to medium use like DIY projects, crafting and so on. The included motor is 1 amp, but I can’t recommend this unit for professional use or for highly demanding applications.

However, this tiny motor creates loud noise while operating. The noise is not a big issue, but noticeable enough. For long term use, earbuds are a must for sure.

Things We Liked

  • Budget sander;
  • Easy to replace paper;
  • Angled tip for Precise sanding.

Things We Didn’t Like

  • Loud motor.

2. Enertwist Mouse Lightweight and Compact Detail Sander

To polish hard to reach areas, this sander is undoubtedly the best in its class. It comes with attachment and accessories that are meant to complete the detailing tasks flawlessly. After finishing the flat surfaces, those attachments are really handy to scratch the corners to leave a spotless finish.

The motor is not as powerful as the Wen sander, but it produces much less noise. With a clear dust canister and velcro pad base, operating this machine is very easy. The price is quite reasonable considering its features and added accessories.

Things We Liked

  • Less noisy;
  • Suitable for hard to reach corners;
  • Includes valuable accessories.
  • Reasonably priced.

Things We Didn’t Like

  • Inconveniently placed power switch.

3. SKIL Corded Multi-Function Detail Sander

Tough on dust– between its micro-filtration system and therefore the 1-1/4″ dust port for a vacuum attachment, you’ll choose your preferred thanks to keeping dust away.

Easy sanding sheet changes the hook and loop system for an easy and quick sanding sheet.

Low vibration– through its ergonomic design and a soft rubber grip, your hand stays comfortable while counterweight balance reduces hand fatigue from vibration. All so that you’ll work longer.

Things We Liked

4. Genesis Corner Palm Sander, Grey

Genesis Corner Palm Sander, Grey
  • Speed: 14,000 OPM;
  • Model No: GPS080;
  • Motor: N/A Amp;
  • Weight: 2.19 lbs;
  • In the package: 3 sandpapers, 80, 120, 240 grits etc.

Mainly it is a classic detail sander with all the basic features we usually look for in a decent detail sander. The difference is, it is the cheapest sander I have ever used. It is really surprising how quality has not been compromised to make this machine available on a tight budget.

There is neither mentionable advantage of this sander, nor any annoying design flaw. The only thing I noticed is, it is heavier and bulkier compared to its other competitors. Besides, the holes on the sanding pad are irregularly placed so that regular vacuum won’t fit in it.

This sander will be useful only for small DIY projects. I can’t ensure how it lasts for the long run, but it felt durable to me. However, I suggest this machine for small projects only, for professional use, it is better to invest in pricier models.

Things We Liked

  • A long warranty offered;
  • Cheapest price;

Things We Didn’t Like

  • Not vacuum compatible;
  • Bulky.

Don’t frown think that, what an oscillating tool is doing in the list of detail sander? Well, it is a sander cum saw cum cutting tool and is very good at all three. It is not a beginners toy as people who are new at using power tools may get puzzled. But for professionals, it is a GEM. this one tool will cut off your cost of purchasing all three items.

Another iconic feature is, it is cordless, runs over a battery. Hence, ideal for carrying different job and project sites. The included battery and charger need minutes to fully charge and hold for hours.

This tool has variable speed settings to make it suitable for various purposes. It may seem pricey, but the added accessories are all from the DEWALT brand. So, no matter how high the price is, the tool is not at all over priced.

Things We Liked

  • Quick changing of accessories;
  • Variable oscillating speed;
  • Multipurpose use;
  • Useful accessories included;
  • Comes with LED worklight;
  • Cordless.

Things We Didn’t Like

What is Detail Sander

A sander that has a small triangular base which is used to create a fine, detailed furnished surface, specially on the corners and edges is known as detail sander. Detail sanders are known as mouse sanders for their size and capability of completing the jobs that an orbital or belt sander can’t complete properly.

The best features of this type of sander are they can be fitted in any tight spaces. It is able to oscillate at very high speed but won’t remove too much of your material, that’s why they are ideal for a good finish.

Benefits of Detail Sander

You may need different types of tools to complete your projects depending on its type. But no matter how big your project is, a detail sander is beneficial for all. The mentionable benefits of a detail sander are-

Easy to Complete

If you use a belt or orbital sander to sand your workpiece in a small space, it’ll be difficult and time consuming. But if you use a detail sander you’ll be able to finish the same job easily, smoothly and of course in a short time.

Included Attachments

Detail sanders come with different types of attachments, so you can use any of them according to your project.

Ornate Carvings

Detail sanders are the best choice for ornate carvings. To get better finishing, you only need to use it slowly, even no extra pressure is needed for this.

Dust Management

Almost all detail sander comes with a dust management system aka dust collection box which collects dust and debris produced during sanding.

Weight

Detail sanders are lighter than other sanders so you can easily handle it and work on any type of surface for a long time. You also store them in a small place as they’re small and lightweight.

Buying Guide

Now that you know what a detail sander is and what are the benefits of using a detail sander, you may want to know how you can choose the right sander for you.

Well, I’ve a solution for this. You can check these features of a sander while buying, they’ll help you to understand which one will be able to perform well to complete your job.

Type

For buying a detail sander, you need to understand what type of detail sander your job requires. For a finishing task in a wooden piece you need a smaller finish sander to deal with rough edges & tight corners. While other ample projects may be done with the palm sander which has a nice grip and you can work with this for a long time without any pain in hand.

Power

Now you need to decide which power system you need for your job from electric powered and battery powered sander. But before you choose, I’d like to mention that electric powered sanders are powerful but less convenient than battery powered as you need to be connected with the power source all time.

On the other hand, battery powered sanders are more convenient as you can move with it wherever you need. But the flaw of the battery powered sanders is it will work for the time the battery is charged. Once the batteries get discharged, you need to wait till they are charged again. But you can manage this by having extra pairs of batteries if possible.

Variable Speed

While working with detail sander, you may need a lot of moderation with its speed. Such as, a gentle speed is good for a soft surface whereas, a hard surface requires higher speed. You can only be able to control the speed when the sander comes with the feature of variable speed control.

Sanding Pad

Before buying you also need to check the sanding pad. Because the sanding ability of the sander is proportional to its grit, the higher the grit is the higher the sanding ability.

Warranty

It is better to check the warranty type and period before buying any power tool including a detail sander. Make sure if you face any operational problem in the machine after purchasing, you’ll receive the support from the manufacturer for the first few years.

Warranty period and type will give you the idea of the quality of the product. In other words, a quality product always comes with a longer warranty.

Price

The best thing about detail sanders are they are available at the price range of $15- $250. So you can get one on any budget.

But you need to remember that, the cheapest one may not give you the support to finish any complicated job. So get the sander that suits your project and budget both.

Tips for Using a Detail Sander

So you have selected your detail sander. If you’re using it for the first time you may think about how to operate it! Because we know it is a very powerful tool.

Well, you must get a manual with the sander, follow the instructions of the manual. Here I am sharing some basic tips that can also help you to operate the tool.

Go Slow

These tools are made to remove a little bit of material at once from the surface. So you need to go slow, if you put extra pressure your workpiece may end up with a strain on it.

Corners First

As detail sanders are small and angled, start with the corners, where a regular sander can’t reach.

No Pressure on the Tips

Generally most beginners use the tip of the machine lifted in the air, but this may damage your sander’s tip. So keep the tool flat on the work surface while sanding.

Safety First

This is also common for all types of power tools! Always protect yourself with safety gears, never use the tool near a fire source and never touch the sanding pad while working.

FAQs

Is an Orbital Sander Better Than a Palm Sander?

Their smaller size means they’re suitable for working with precision, and that they don’t tend to go away marks within the same way an orbital sander does – so if you would like to sand down a bit of wood that has been treated or painted, a palm sander may be a more sensible choice.

Can I Sand a Deck with an Orbital Sander?

Sand the deck with an orbital floor sander. If the decking boards are made up of hardwood like teak and that they are warped, use coarse 20-grit sandpaper for your first pass. Softwood decks don’t need such aggressive treatment, however, especially if the wood remains straight. Start with 50-grit paper.

What are the Differences Between an Orbital Sander and a Disc Sander?

Both orbital sanders and sheet sanders move abrasively during a circular pattern. However, while a sheet sander uses sheets of sandpaper because it is abrasive, an orbital sander uses individual sanding discs. These discs are available in multiple grits, and they tend to cost quite regular sandpaper.

Conclusion

Hope you’ve got a proper idea about the type, features of a good sander and also some best quality detail sander of the market. Now you can easily decide which one you’ll need to complete your project.

I’ve tried to facilitate the selection process for you. Now it’s up to you to choose the right one for your job.

So get your one, be safe and enjoy your job!
